THE LARGEST GATHERING OF TELEVISION AND MEDIA PROFESSIONALS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE NEW EUROPE MARKET (NEM), Dubrovnik 8th – 11th May 2013

Zagreb (NEM) / April 11th 2013 / New Europe Market (NEM)Dubrovnik is a first time event gathering professionals in television, production, IPTV, cable distribution and marketing agencies, as well as all prominent media figures. During this 4-day event attendees will have the opportunity to receive insight into the latest trends in the industry.

THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?

Specialized food channels are a new trend on all platforms. Did television make cooking popular or was it other way around? When and where was this TV format first introduced and can any free to air television expect good ratings without cooking shows? These are just some of the questions that NEM's speakers will attempt to answer.

The phenomenon of the growing popularity of cooking shows and channels has already influenced our lifestyles. Viewers now have more information on food, cooking and ingredients, chefs have become stars, and cooking at home is now an important factor of family and social life.

NEM's speaker Nick Thorogood is an expert in food programming, and as such, as the Senior Vice President of Content and Marketing of Scripps Networks Interactive, is responsible for overseeing content development and strategy for Food Network in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “Don’t be surprised that food programming is the new rock ‘n’ roll and its chefs are the new rock stars. People need food, people eat food, people love food, and by adding in a layer of personality, peak time production value and programming that all the family can enjoy, food has grown its audience and their passion. The specialist food channels have shown through their growth just how much can be achieved and now mainstream television too is copying this success. Food TV is not just family friendly viewing at its very best, but a feast for the eyes and the soul.”

Ashley Colburn, a well-known producer and travel expert in Croatia who has been awarded for her documentaries “WOW Croatia” and “Wonders of Croatia”, understands the importance cooking shows play in the world. “I believe the increased amount of cooking programs is a result of cooking making television popular.  High ratings have even transformed reality and travel programming to a common cooking theme due to the demand and interest in food programming worldwide.  I have filmed in more than 25 countries to produce travel content, but in some way food always makes an appearance as audiences worldwide often travel to eat!  While maybe many think that no more cooking programs could be created, I think we will have lots of surprises and twists in the future as long as people continue to tune in.”

Mate Janković, the moderator of the panel, is a well-known TV personality and gastro promotion expert who perfected his craft throughout the world. “The importance of food is probably best defined by the proverb: "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are." There is no doubt that culinary and cooking were popular before the TV shows, some of the best and most beautiful moments in life happen around a table full of good food. Food TV shows bring awareness to unhealthy lifestyle habits that we tend to have nowadays, teaching the viewers about healthy food in general, encouraging them to explore new ingredients, to try out new recipes and to become familiar with other cultures by getting to know their national specialties. Food is a universal language. “
