France Televisions & SES will present under the title "ECMA-407 – Met Challenges in UHD TV and Super Hi-Vision Audio Transport & Creation" an European satellite project with ECMA-407, the world’s first 3D audio standard, inspired by astrophysics and tomography, during the IBC Content Everywhere Technology in Action Theatre, located in Hall 3 and part of IBC Content Everywhere, september 13, 2015, starting time 16:30.

Unlike MPEG-H or ATSC, ECMA-407 extends existing 2D infrastructure to provide a high-quality 3D experience up to NHK 22.2. The ECMA-407 payload of less than 2kb/s for NHK 22.2 is invisibly encapsulated and delivers all 24 channels over an ordinary 7.1 Surround carrier, together with HEVC.

ECMA-407 presents a sound alternative for the broadcaster who wishes to extend his HD audio infrastructure in a backwards-compatible manner, for the simultaneous delivery of immersive UHD 3D audio, HD Surround and the ITU stereo downmix.

At the same time, the same ECMA-407 payload may drive “second screens” over the Internet. All systems automatically switch to 3D whenever an ECMA-407 decoder is present. The 3D signal is rendered over headphones, dipole speakers or loudspeaker arrays.

An ECMA-407-compliant automatic 2D to 3D upmix, based on David Hilbert’s discovery of the invariant field, can be seamlessly integrated. Besides media transport, the present case study makes ECMA-407 the basis for the broadcaster’s cost-efficient, backward-compatible transition from HD to UHD.
